Understanding the condition
What causes axillary breast tissue — and why it won't go away on its own
Axillary breast is a structural condition — not a weight issue. The tissue present in the armpit cannot be reduced by diet, exercise, or any topical treatment.
During embryonic development, breast tissue forms along a 'milk line' that runs from the armpit to the groin. In most people, only the chest portion develops — but accessory breast tissue can persist anywhere along this line. The armpit is the most common site.
This tissue behaves like breast tissue — it can be glandular (firm), fatty, or both. It may swell and become tender with hormonal changes, including menstruation and pregnancy. It is not related to body weight, so weight loss does not eliminate it.
Surgical removal is the only permanent solution. Depending on the composition, the approach involves liposuction for fatty tissue, direct excision for glandular tissue, or a combination of both.
Congenital Tissue
Axillary breast is embryologically retained breast tissue — present since birth, not acquired with weight gain. Surgery removes it permanently.
Not Related to Weight
Unlike axillary fat, accessory glandular tissue does not reduce with weight loss. It responds to hormones, not calories.
Hormonal Swelling
The tissue can enlarge and become tender before menstruation or during pregnancy — a characteristic that confirms its glandular nature.
Permanent Removal
Once surgically removed, the tissue does not regenerate. Results are permanent, though significant weight gain can add new fat in the area.
Dr. Ankit's surgical approach
The Underarm Contouring Protocol — tissue assessment, then precise removal
The right technique depends on whether the tissue is predominantly fatty, glandular, or mixed. Dr. Ankit determines this before surgery.
Pre-Surgical Tissue Assessment
Clinical examination and ultrasound imaging determine the composition of the axillary tissue — fatty, glandular, or mixed. This determines whether liposuction alone, direct excision, or both are required.
VASER Liposuction for Fat Component
If the tissue has a significant fatty component, VASER liposuction removes it precisely through tiny incisions — no visible scar, fast recovery, smooth contour.
Glandular Excision if Required
Firm glandular tissue cannot be suctioned. It is excised through a small, carefully placed incision in the armpit's natural crease — the scar is virtually invisible when healed.
Most cases are treated as daycare — local anaesthesia, procedure completed in 1–2 hours, home the same day.
Bilateral (both sides) treatment is the most common request. Each side is assessed independently to ensure symmetrical results.

Am I a candidate?
Axillary breast surgery is right for you if you recognise yourself here
The condition affects many women and is far more treatable than most realise — with minimal downtime and permanent results.
Bulging underarms in clothing
There is visible fullness or bulging in the armpit area — especially noticeable in sleeveless tops, fitted dresses, or swimwear. It doesn't go away with weight loss.
Discomfort or irritation
The tissue causes friction, chafing, or irritation — particularly in summer or during exercise. Some patients experience pain or tenderness before menstruation.
Firm lump in the armpit
There is a firm, sometimes tender lump in the armpit that is not a lymph node. It may enlarge during hormonal changes — this is characteristic of glandular axillary tissue.
It shows in photographs
The bulge is visible in photos and affects your confidence in sleeveless or fitted clothing. You've been self-conscious about it for years.
It gets worse with hormones
The tissue swells and becomes tender before periods or during pregnancy — confirming it is glandular in nature and will not reduce without surgery.
You want a permanent solution
You've lived with this long enough. A single procedure permanently removes the tissue and restores smooth, natural underarm contour.
Axillary breast removal is one of the most straightforward procedures with one of the highest patient satisfaction rates. Dr. Ankit will examine the tissue, determine its composition, and give you a clear, direct plan.

Axillary breast removal — approach matched to tissue type
The technique depends entirely on the type and extent of tissue. Dr. Ankit determines this at examination.
VASER Liposuction Only
For cases where the axillary tissue is predominantly fatty with good skin elasticity. Tiny incisions, no visible scar, fastest recovery. Most suitable for younger patients.
Glandular Excision
For firm glandular tissue that cannot be removed by suction. A small incision placed in the armpit fold excises the gland directly — scar is virtually invisible when healed.
Combined Lipo + Excision
Most common approach. Liposuction removes the fatty outer layer while the firm glandular core is excised — producing the smoothest, most complete result.
Unilateral Treatment
One side only — for patients with asymmetric axillary tissue or where only one armpit is affected.
Bilateral Treatment
Both armpits treated in a single session. The most common scenario — ensures symmetrical results with one recovery.
