What is Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty is the surgery of the eyelids. It can be done for many reasons, however,  in our practice it is mostly done for cosmetic improvement of the eye area of face.

With normal ageing process, the skin and muscles lose strength over time. The skin is thinnest around the eyes, and hence, is the first to show these signs. This results in increased creases around the eyes, and also droopy eyelids. Also, as the muscle starts to lose strength, it is unable to hold the fat in place. This fat, in turn, starts to collect under the eyes causing UNDER EYE BAGS or Puffy eyes

Blepharoplasty is done to improve the look of the eyes in all of these cases. In case of droopy eyelids, excessive skin is removed, and for under eye bags, the fat deposits are removed. There is no visible scar (Click here to view the scar), as the incision is given at the lashline. Also, if needed, excessive skin can be removed. It is also done for double eyelid creation or Asian Blepharoplasty.

Are Blepharoplasty results Permanent?

The Lower Blepharoplasty surgery removes the fat bags under eyelids permanently. This fat is removed entirely, and hence provides with near permanent results.

In upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the excess skin is removed. This provides for a much youthful and fresh appearance to your face. The results will last you for at least 10-15 years, if not more. However, it will not stop the natural ageing of your face.

You can increase the longevity of your results by keeping the area well moisturised, and applying sunscreen regularly. This will delay the natural ageing of your skin.

What are the indications for Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

The eyelid surgery is recommended in the following circumstances:

  • Baggy undereye area
  • Eyelid skin wrinkling
  • Puffiness under the eyes
  • Tired looking eyes
  • Drooping eyelids, or hooded eyelids
  • Deep tear troughs
  • Baggy eyelids with sagging skin
  • Absent crease in upper lid or for Double Eyelid

Is Blepharoplasty truly scarless?

Blepharoplasty is not exactly scarless, but the scars are almost invisible. In lower lid blepharoplasty, the incision is placed inside the lower eyelid, and hence there is absolutely no scar on the outside.

In upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision is placed on the natural fold of the upper eyelid. This, after healing, shrinks to such a thin line, which coincides completely with your natural fold, that it is technically invisible. You can see how the scar will look like post-surgery:

How is the recovery post Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a minor procedure, and the recovery is very smooth. The patient is free to perform normal daily activities, though, should avoid heavy manual activities. There will be some swelling and bruising in most of the patients, however, it usually resolves within 5-7 days’ time. You can head back to work after the swelling subsides. You an also use make-up to cover up the under-eye bruising.

What is Asian Blepharoplasty, Sliver Blepharoplasty, or Double Eyelid Surgery?

Asian Blepharoplasty, which is commonly known as Double Eyelid Creation surgery or Sliver Blepharoplasty is the procedure used to create a crease or fold in the upper eyelids, in people where it is not present naturally. This is usually seen in certain Asian communities, and hence the name. In this procedure, a tiny sliver of tissue is removed from the upper eyelids, which upon healing, gives rise to the eyelid fold or double eyelids.

What is the procedure for Blepharoplasty?

The Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery is a day care surgery, which means you will be discharged on the same day. The surgery is performed under Local anaesthesia.

For Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

In Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty, Dr Ankit will make the incision along the natural crease line of the eyes. This incision is used to remove the excess skin and fat, if present. After removing the excess skin, sutures are placed to close the gap. The scar is practically invisible after healing.

For Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty:

In Lower Eyelid Surgery, the incision is placed inside the eyelids. It is the pink part of your lower eyelids, just inside the lash line. A protective covering is placed above your eyeballs, and hence, your eyes will be perfectly safe during the surgery. The excess fat, or the eyebags are then removed, giving you the smooth under eye area which you wanted. In case, there is excess skin in the lower eyelids as well, then it is also removed. This is done by placing the incision on the lash line, and hence, after healing, there will be no visible scar.

I visited Panache Aesthetics a month ago for lower lid blepharoplasty. My surgery was done by Dr. ANKIT GUPTA. During the Surgery– I didn’t feel any sort of discomfort or pain, he was very confident. The surgery took an hour. After the surgery – – After I went home and for a week, I felt very little to no pain (even without painkillers). My eyes swole for next 2-4 days but after that swelling started reducing. It was completely gone by 14th day. Dr Ankit gupta and their staff took regular follow ups and made sure that I am not facing any sort of issue. Results- results were totally worth it, my under eye bags are Completely gone. I am really happy with the results.
