What is a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is a short, elegant surgical procedure that permanently shortens the distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip — a measurement known as the philtrum. As we age, this distance increases, the upper lip loses its natural pout, and the vermillion border (the pink border of the lip) becomes less visible. A lip lift reverses this process by removing a carefully calculated strip of skin just beneath the nostrils, elevating the upper lip to its ideal position. The result is a more defined cupid's bow, increased pink lip show, and a more youthful, balanced lower face — all without the temporary, sometimes overfilled look that injectable fillers can create. Unlike fillers, results are permanent. At Panache in Delhi, Dr. Ankit Gupta performs the subnasal bullhorn lip lift — widely considered the gold standard technique — with incisions discreetly hidden within the natural crease beneath the nose.
Who is it for?
A lip lift is suitable for a wide range of patients and is one of the most naturally transformative procedures in facial aesthetics.
- Patients with a philtrum length greater than 15–18mm (or simply too long in proportion to their face)
- Those who feel their upper lip has flattened or thinned with age
- Patients who want more permanent results than lip fillers provide
- Those who feel lip fillers make their lips look too large or unnatural
- Patients who want to enhance their cupid's bow definition
- Anyone wanting a more youthful, expressive upper lip without volume alone
- Suitable from the late 20s onwards — there is no upper age limit
The Procedure
The lip lift is performed under local anaesthesia in our clinic and takes approximately 45–60 minutes. No general anaesthesia or hospital admission is required.
Dr. Ankit carefully measures your philtrum length and marks the precise amount of skin to be removed — this is the most critical step in achieving a natural, proportionate result.
Local anaesthetic is administered along the upper lip and base of the nose. The procedure is essentially painless once the anaesthesia takes effect.
A thin, precisely designed crescent (bullhorn) of skin is removed from just beneath the nostrils. The shape of the excision is engineered to elevate the central lip while maintaining natural lateral contour.
Fine sutures close the incision within the natural crease beneath the nose. Sutures are removed at 7 days and the scar typically becomes virtually invisible within 3–6 months.
Recovery
Recovery is straightforward and most patients are comfortable at home within a day or two. The key is following aftercare instructions carefully in the first week.
- Day 1–3: mild swelling and tightness beneath the nose. Cold compresses help. No makeup on the area.
- Day 4–7: swelling reducing. Sutures in place — avoid stretching the lip (no wide yawning, minimal talking).
- Day 7–10: sutures removed. Most patients look presentable at this point.
- Week 2–4: residual swelling resolves. Scar begins to fade.
- Month 3–6: scar becomes a fine, discreet line hidden in the natural crease. Final result fully visible.
- Avoid spicy food, extreme lip stretching, and strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.
What to Expect
The lip lift produces a natural-looking elevation of the upper lip — not an overfilled or artificial appearance. Most patients are surprised at how the subtle positional change transforms the entire lower face.
- More pink lip visible at rest — fuller-looking upper lip without added volume
- Improved cupid's bow definition and upper lip curl
- Lower face looks more youthful and balanced
- Results are permanent and do not require maintenance
- Can be combined with lip fillers for both lift and volume if desired
- Can be performed alongside other facial procedures (rhinoplasty, facelift, blepharoplasty)
