Understanding the problem
Why the abdomen changes after pregnancy — and why diet alone can't fix it
Post-pregnancy abdominal changes are structural. Skin, muscle, and fat all change — and only surgery addresses all three simultaneously.
Pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall beyond its elastic limit. The rectus abdominis muscles — which form the 'six-pack' — separate along the midline, a condition called diastasis recti. This muscle gap causes the lower abdomen to protrude regardless of body weight, creating a 'pouch' that no exercise can close.
The overlying skin also loses elasticity after prolonged stretching. Diet and exercise can reduce the fat beneath it, but the skin itself cannot recontract. The result is loose, sometimes hanging skin that persists at a healthy weight.
A tummy tuck directly corrects all three components: the muscles are sutured back together, excess skin is excised, and liposuction removes any residual fat deposits — restoring the flat, firm abdomen that pregnancy altered.
Diastasis Recti
The abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy. This gap cannot be closed by exercise — only surgical plication (suturing) corrects it.
Inelastic Skin
Stretched skin cannot recontract after pregnancy or weight loss. No cream or treatment reverses this — excision is the only solution.
Subcutaneous Fat
Stubborn fat deposits in the lower abdomen resist diet and exercise, especially post-pregnancy when hormonal patterns change.
Permanent Correction
A tummy tuck is not reversible, but neither are the changes that necessitate it. Results are long-lasting with a stable weight.
Dr. Ankit's surgical approach
The Complete Abdomen Reset — muscles, skin, and fat corrected in one surgery
A tummy tuck is three procedures in one — muscle repair, skin excision, and liposuction — sequenced precisely for a natural, flat result.
Muscle Plication — Closing the Gap
The separated rectus muscles are sutured together along the midline — restoring the abdominal corset. This single step can dramatically flatten the abdomen and improve core function, independent of fat removal.
Skin Excision — Removing the Excess
A carefully planned incision along the bikini line allows removal of the excess skin panel between the navel and pubic area. The navel is repositioned to a natural height. The scar sits entirely within the bikini line.
Liposuction Contouring — The Final Polish
VASER liposuction of the upper abdomen and flanks is performed simultaneously — ensuring a smooth, flat result across the entire midsection, not just the lower half.
The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia and takes 2–5 hours. Most patients stay one night and return home the following day.
Dr. Ankit recommends waiting until you have completed your family before undergoing a tummy tuck — a subsequent pregnancy will stretch the repaired muscles again.

Recovery at a glance
What to expect — an honest timeline
Real milestones, no surprises. Most patients are back to normal well within a month.
Surgery Day
General anaesthesia. Drain tubes placed. One night in hospital. Binder applied.
Week 1
Rest at home. Drains removed. Walking in a slightly bent posture is normal.
Weeks 2–3
Sutures removed. Posture normalises. Light daily activities resume.
Weeks 4–6
Return to office work. Gentle exercise permitted. Swelling reduces steadily.
Month 3–6
Final flat, firm abdominal result fully visible. Scar matures and fades over the year.
Am I a candidate?
A tummy tuck is right for you if you recognise yourself here
The ideal candidate is done with pregnancies, near their target weight, and has realistic expectations about the scar.
Post-pregnancy abdomen
Your abdomen changed significantly after pregnancy and has not returned despite exercise and diet. The muscle gap or loose skin simply won't resolve on its own.
After significant weight loss
You've lost a lot of weight — either naturally or post-bariatric surgery — and have a panel of loose, hanging skin that exercise cannot tighten.
Separated abdominal muscles
You've been told you have diastasis recti — or you can feel the gap yourself. Your abdomen protrudes even at a healthy weight. Only surgical repair closes this.
Clothing sits wrong
Trousers and fitted tops don't fit the way they should at your current weight. The lower abdominal area creates a shape that doesn't match the rest of your body.
Done with pregnancies
You are not planning further pregnancies. A subsequent pregnancy after a tummy tuck will not be dangerous, but will stretch the repaired muscles again.
Near your ideal weight
You're not planning significant weight loss. Tummy tuck is most effective when body weight is stable — not used as a weight loss tool.
A tummy tuck produces one of the most dramatically satisfying results in body contouring. Dr. Ankit will assess your muscle separation, skin laxity, and fat distribution to design the most effective plan for your anatomy.

Types of tummy tuck — matched to your anatomy and goals
Not every abdomen requires the same procedure. The extent of skin excess and muscle separation determines the right approach.
Full Abdominoplasty
Addresses the entire abdomen — muscle repair, full-panel skin excision, navel repositioning. Best for significant skin excess after pregnancy or weight loss.
Mini Tummy Tuck
Targets only the lower abdomen below the navel. Smaller incision, no navel repositioning, quicker recovery. Suitable when excess skin is confined to the lower panel only.
Extended Tummy Tuck
Extends the incision laterally to include the flanks and hip area — for patients with skin excess that wraps around the sides.
Fleur-de-Lis (Vertical + Horizontal)
Addresses excess skin in both directions — used after massive weight loss where a horizontal incision alone is insufficient. Results in a vertical midline scar in addition to the bikini scar.
Tummy Tuck + Liposuction
Combined in a single session to address both skin excess and stubborn fat simultaneously. The most common combination — delivers the most comprehensive abdominal result.
Post-Bariatric Body Contouring
Specialised approach for patients who have lost large amounts of weight after bariatric surgery. May involve extended or circumferential excision (belt lipectomy).

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your consultation.
01 What is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)?
A tummy tuck — medically known as abdominoplasty — is a surgical procedure that addresses three distinct components of the abdomen simultaneously: separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) are sutured back together; excess skin and fat between the navel and pubic area are removed; and liposuction refines the upper abdomen and flanks. It is not a weight loss procedure — it is a body contouring surgery that restores the flat, firm abdomen that pregnancy, weight fluctuation, or ageing has altered.
02 Can a tummy tuck fix diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles)?
Yes — muscle repair (plication) is a core component of a full abdominoplasty and is specifically designed to correct diastasis recti. The rectus abdominis muscles are sutured back together along the midline using permanent sutures, restoring the abdominal corset. This alone can dramatically flatten the lower abdomen and improve core stability — independent of fat or skin removal. No exercise programme can close a diastasis recti gap of more than 2–3cm; surgery is the only reliable correction.
03 How is a tummy tuck different from liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat only — it does not address skin laxity or muscle separation. A tummy tuck removes skin, repairs muscles, and includes liposuction as one component. If you have loose or hanging abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight loss, liposuction alone will worsen the appearance of that skin by reducing the volume beneath it. The right procedure depends on your specific anatomy — Dr. Ankit assesses this at consultation and recommends the most appropriate approach.
04 What are the scars like after a tummy tuck?
A full abdominoplasty produces a horizontal scar along the lower abdomen — positioned carefully within the bikini or underwear line so it is completely hidden by standard swimwear. The length varies depending on the extent of skin removal. The navel is also repositioned and will have a small circumferential scar hidden within the navel itself. Scars are typically red for the first 3–6 months, then gradually fade and flatten over 12–18 months. Dr. Ankit uses layered, tension-free closure and silicone scar management post-operatively.
05 Is a tummy tuck permanent?
Yes — the muscles are repaired with permanent sutures, and the removed skin does not return. Results are long-lasting as long as body weight remains stable. A subsequent pregnancy after a tummy tuck is medically safe, but will re-stretch the repaired muscles and the skin — so Dr. Ankit recommends completing your family before surgery. Significant weight gain after surgery will also stretch the remaining abdominal tissue.
06 How long is recovery after a tummy tuck?
A full abdominoplasty requires 1 night in hospital. The first week involves rest at home with drains in place (removed at the first follow-up). Walking upright may take a few days as the tightened abdomen adapts. Most patients return to desk work by Week 2–3. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for 6 weeks. Final result — including scar maturation — develops over 6–12 months. A mini tummy tuck has a faster recovery, typically returning to light activities within 2 weeks.
07 What is the cost of a tummy tuck in Delhi?
Tummy tuck cost at Panache varies based on several factors: (1) Type of procedure — mini tummy tuck, full abdominoplasty, extended, or fleur-de-lis each involves different surgical complexity; (2) Whether liposuction is combined — abdomen, flanks, and back are frequently treated simultaneously; (3) Degree of muscle repair required — significant diastasis recti adds surgical time; (4) Hospital stay — tummy tuck requires general anaesthesia and 1 night in hospital; (5) Post-bariatric cases — patients after major weight loss often require extended or circumferential excision, which is more complex. Dr. Ankit provides a complete, itemised cost breakdown at consultation. There are no hidden charges.
