Droopy Eyelids: Why do they happen?
Droopy Eyelids or hooded eyelids is a condition where there is excess sagging of the upper eyelid. This gives an aged appearance to the face, and getting it rectified can instantly shave off a decade from your face. Blepharoplasty is the most effective surgical solution to correct droopy eyelids permanently.

Many of our patients who visit us for Droopy Eyelids, wonder what is the reason for the same. After all, not everyone has hooded eyelids. Some of the common reasons can be:
- The skin around the eyes is very thin. It is one of the thinnest skin in the human body.
- Normal aging process.
- Due to the movements that we have around the eyes with a frequent blinking.
- As the collagen and elastin fibers of the body degrade, these can become slacks and it hangs down.
- It can be genetic.
- Can be because of the environmental reasons like - smoking a lot.
- If there is extra fat, or if the septum is loose this fat can bulge out, and that causes the extra amount of fat which is seen from the inner or the middle part of the upper eyelid.
- The lacrimal gland has fallen from its place or prolapsed. It can be seen as a bulge on the outer part of the upper eyelid.
- If you are from the Asian origin. You do not genetically have a good Lid crease.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Droopy eyelids — clinically referred to as ptosis (when the upper lid muscle is weak) or dermatochalasis (when excess skin causes hooding) — are not just a cosmetic concern. In more pronounced cases, the excess skin can impair the upper field of vision, causing eyestrain and fatigue.
You should consider a consultation if:
- Your upper eyelids are visibly heavy or fold over your lash line
- You feel you need to raise your eyebrows to see clearly
- You look tired, sad, or older than you feel
- You have noticed progressive worsening over recent years
- The drooping affects one eye more than the other (asymmetry)

Treatment Options for Droopy Eyelids
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty (Surgical)
The most effective and long-lasting treatment for droopy or hooded eyelids is upper eyelid blepharoplasty — a procedure that removes the excess skin, and where needed, any herniated fat, from the upper eyelid.
The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, takes approximately 45–60 minutes, and requires just 7–10 days of social downtime. Results are permanent — the removed skin does not regrow — and patients consistently describe the outcome as making them look “a decade younger, but still completely like themselves.”
Non-Surgical Options
For patients with mild hooding or those not ready for surgery, injectable treatments including botulinum toxin (neuromodulator) can provide a subtle eyebrow lift, reducing the appearance of upper eyelid heaviness. Results last 3–4 months and are not a substitute for surgery in significant cases.
